Lead Levels in Baby Foods Unacceptable: New York Personal Injury Lawyer Kenneth A. Wilhelm Voices His Concern

New York, N.Y. (PRWEB) May 08, 2013

Assemblyman Felix Ortiz has asked food manufacturers to alert consumers about lead levels, particularly in baby food products that can cause serious harm to young children. Based on an April 10 news article in The Post Star News, Ortiz has said that it is time for food manufacturers such as Dole, Gerber and Del Monte to follow “stricter business ethics” by taking steps immediately to inform the public about the potential lead poisoning danger their products such as juices and baby food might pose to young children.

The report states that there were 1,183 cases of lead poisoning in 2011 in New York City alone. Ortiz is currently carrying legislation A4885, which requires products that have been tested by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to be labeled as such, according to the article. Ortiz told The Post Star News that food producers should do the responsible thing by informing consumers about lead levels in their products because even small amounts of lead exposure can have significant health effects on young children.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are about 535,000 children between the ages of 1 and 5 in the United States, with a lead level of more than 5 micrograms per deciliter of blood. CDC last year changed the threshold standard for lead poisoning from 10 micrograms per deciliter of blood to 5 micrograms, which increased the number of children with unacceptable levels of lead in their systems. CDC officials say that lead exposure can result in internal organ damage, irreversible brain damage, learning disabilities and behavioral issues.

Consumers should know what their food contains so they can make informed purchase decisions, said New York personal injury lawyer Kenneth A. Wilhelm. “Knowing what we know today about the harmful effects of lead, it is absolutely essential for food manufacturers to put a warning label on products containing lead.”

Lead poisoning can cause serious long-term problems for young children, Wilhelm said. “It is not just the victims, but also their families that suffer with them. Consumers deserve to be made aware of what’s in their food, especially the food they are giving to their young children.”
